December 1st 2013. End of importation of non authorized natural health products

End of the first transition phase.
Since December 1st 2013, manufacturing, packaging labelling and importation of Natural Health Products for which a licence has not been issued is forbidden and subject to compliance and enforcement action.  This is the end of the first transition phase to compliance to the Natural Health Product Regulation.  Once a product licence is issued, the product is given a Natural Product Number (NPN) which is printed on the label.
What does it mean?
Natural Health Product without a licence will be retained at the customs.  Enforcement action may range from importers receiving a refusal notice to manufacturers being requested to stop selling the non-compliant product.
Phase 2 starts now and will end August 31, 2014.  During this period, products without market authorization may not be manufactured nor imported.  A phasing out of products without market authorization at the retailers level will be allowed.  On September 1st, 2014, only product with market authorization will be allowed for sale.
